The Hidden Cost of Buying Counterfeit Goods – What Shoppers Should Know

Counterfeit products can pose serious dangers, from hidden chemicals to funding global crime networks, but shoppers can take practical steps to shop with confidence.

Finding a great deal is part of the thrill of online shopping. But some deals really are too good to be true.  Behind those bargains is the unfortunate reality that counterfeit goods remain a widespread problem.

A fake handbag or knockoff toy might seem harmless at first glance. In reality, counterfeit products can pose health risks, drive up consumer costs, and fund criminal activity around the world. That’s why eBay invests in tech, tools, and staff to monitor our platform for counterfeits and remove any fraudulent listings.

Counterfeits can pose safety risks

Unlike legitimate products, counterfeit goods can be manufactured with no oversight, no quality controls, and no safety standards, making them far more dangerous than many shoppers realize.

For example, authentic toys sold in the U.S. must meet more than 100 stringent safety standards, according to The Toy Association. They must adhere to exacting battery and magnet requirements and meet strict limits for lead and other chemicals. None of those protections apply to counterfeit items.

Recent enforcement actions highlight the scope of the issue. In Norfolk, Virginia, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents recently seized nearly $800,000 worth of fake toys, including knockoffs of popular brands, such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Harry Potter, and Labubu. And in the U.K., inspectors uncovered imitation Lego sets and other toys that failed basic safety checks. In fact, one report found that 75% of toys seized at the U.K. border failed safety tests, with many containing banned chemicals or serious choking hazards.

Toys aren’t the only concern. Counterfeit clothing and makeup similarly have high levels of dangerous chemicals. Investigators have discovered arsenic, bacteria, carcinogens, fungi, and other hazardous substances in counterfeit cosmetics. A 2026 assessment conducted by the American Apparel & Footwear Association determined that 41% of counterfeit apparel tested did not meet U.S. and international safety standards.

Where does the money from counterfeiting go?

Counterfeiting doesn’t only hurt consumers and legitimate businesses – it often fuels organized crime.

Law enforcement agencies around the world have repeatedly connected counterfeit sales to sophisticated criminal networks. Most notably, the terrorists behind the 2015 Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack funded their operation by selling counterfeit sneakers. Proceeds from fake merchandise have also been linked to groups such as the Camorra in Italy and Chinese triads.

How eBay works to protect shoppers

At eBay, trust is the foundation of our marketplace. We invest heavily in technology, expert teams, and partnerships to help keep counterfeit goods off our platform.

Using AI-supported monitoring, dedicated in-house specialists, and close collaboration with brands and law enforcement, we block the vast majority of counterfeit listings before they ever reach shoppers. These efforts prevent nearly 99% of suspected counterfeit items from appearing on eBay in the first place. But online safety is a shared responsibility, and informed consumers are a powerful line of defense.

Whether you’re shopping for everyday essentials, a hard-to-find collectible, or a luxury item, a few basic precautions can help you avoid counterfeits:

  • Shop on trusted platforms, such as eBay. Reputable marketplaces invest in tools and policies designed to identify and remove fakes.
  • Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true. Extremely low prices are often a red flag.
  • Examine product details carefully. Missing trademarks, vague descriptions, or poor-quality packaging can signal a counterfeit.
  • Check seller reviews and history. Feedback from other buyers can offer valuable insight.
  • Report suspected fakes. If you believe you’ve purchased a counterfeit item online, report it so it can be investigated and removed.

Smart shopping protects everyone

At eBay, we’re committed to maintaining a safe, trusted marketplace where people can buy and sell with confidence. By staying informed and shopping smart, together we can help keep counterfeit goods out of our homes and off the market.
